Realme 17 Pro+: 50 MP periscope, 200 MP sensor and a flat screen, built for global markets

With the mid-range and premium smartphone market picking up speed as new chip generations land, Realme is reportedly already preparing its next big push. Known for shaking up the usual technical trade-offs by squeezing in technologies normally reserved for far pricier handsets, the company is sharpening the outline of its upcoming numbered series.

Well-known leaker Digital Chat Station has just shared fresh details about the most ambitious model in that line-up: the Realme 17 Pro+. Between a flat OLED panel built for media, a surprisingly serious camera array led by a genuine periscope telephoto lens, and an unusual distribution strategy, this upcoming handset deserves a close look.

A flagship designed for global markets, not for China

This is unquestionably the headline detail from the leak: the Realme 17 Pro+ is said to skip China altogether and be reserved exclusively for international markets. That commercial decision may come as a surprise in an industry where manufacturers almost always put their home market first, but it changes everything for European and international buyers.

Normally, importing an Asian smartphone means waiting several weeks (sometimes several months) for a Global Version to appear, or making do with Chinese variants that require software tweaking. Here, the process is reversed. A model engineered from the outset for international markets means:

  • Optimal network compatibility: every European 4G and 5G frequency band (notably the B20 and B28 bands that are essential across Europe) should be supported natively by the modem out of the box.
  • A ready-to-use software environment: the picture has changed here. Oppo has confirmed the end of Realme UI, and every future model from the brand now ships with ColorOS — we went through the list of devices affected by the switch. Nothing has been confirmed for this particular model yet, but it should therefore arrive straight onto ColorOS 17; and if it were still to ship with Realme UI, the update would follow very shortly after. Either way, you get official Google services and Widevine L1 certification, the one that unlocks Netflix and Disney+ in high definition — standard on every Global Version, and precisely what is missing from handsets imported from China.
  • Direct supply: for our shop, which specialises in Global Versions, this guarantees quick addition to our catalogue without having to wait behind the Chinese release schedule.

A large, completely flat OLED display

On the ergonomic and visual front, Realme is tipped to take the sensible route by dropping curved panels in favour of a completely flat 6.78-inch OLED display with 1.5K resolution. The exact refresh rate has not been specified yet, but the source points to a very high figure. For reference, the previous generation already reached 144 Hz, delivering exemplary smoothness for browsing and competitive gaming.

Beyond the spec sheet, going back to a flat format brings concrete day-to-day benefits:

  • No more stray reflections: curved screens have an annoying habit of distorting light along the edges, creating two distracting bright bands outdoors or under a ceiling light. A flat panel guarantees uniform legibility across the whole surface.
  • An end to accidental touches: when you hold your phone one-handed or in landscape for gaming, your palm no longer risks triggering an unwanted action on the touch-sensitive edge.
  • Easier protection: fitting a screen protector or tempered glass onto flat glass takes just a few seconds, with no fiddly liquid adhesive and no stubborn air bubbles along the sides.

Cameras: a true 50 MP periscope zoom arrives

Photography is easily the best-documented part of this new leak. Realme is reportedly testing a rear triple-camera setup that looks unusually muscular for this price bracket:

  • 200-megapixel main sensor: early indications point to the Samsung HP5. That kind of resolution captures surgical levels of detail in daylight and allows pixel binning to gather as much light as possible in low-light conditions.
  • 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor: for sweeping landscapes, architecture and group shots taken in tight spaces.
  • 50-megapixel periscope telephoto (3.5x optical zoom): expected to use the Samsung JN5, this module is the phone’s biggest selling point.

Fitting a periscope telephoto lens to a device in this price segment is rare enough to be worth highlighting. Unlike a conventional digital zoom (which simply crops into the main image at the cost of a clear loss of resolution and visible digital noise), an optical periscope zoom uses a set of physical prisms and lenses to bring the subject closer. The result is genuine 3.5x optical magnification at the full 50 MP resolution, ideal for isolating an architectural detail or shooting sharp portraits with natural background blur.

It is worth stressing that while the triple-camera structure and the presence of the periscope look well advanced, the exact Samsung HP5 and JN5 part numbers remain industry assumptions for now, pending official confirmation.

Processor and battery: the two big unknowns

While the cameras and the display are described in some detail, two fundamental elements are still in the dark: the chip and the battery capacity. The leak mentions no specific processor, leaving the door open to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7-series or 8-series platform, or an equivalent MediaTek Dimensity solution.

Likewise, the precise battery capacity and charging power have not been confirmed for the Realme 17 Pro+. To give a rough idea and place the manufacturer’s recent standards in context, the previous-generation Realme 16 Pro+ packs a 7,000 mAh battery with 80 W Fast Charging, while other variants in the 16 series pushed as far as 8,000 mAh, as we detailed in our article on the launch of the Realme 16 Pro and 16 Pro+. It is essential to remember, though, that these figures belong to the previous generation and say nothing definitive about the choices made for the 17 Pro+.

Price and availability: what to expect?

At this early stage, Realme has announced neither pricing nor an official launch date for its upcoming international flagship. Its final positioning will depend heavily on the chip it settles on and on the global economic backdrop surrounding the cost of memory components.

As a guide, the previous-generation model currently sells for €469.90 in our shop. If Realme manages to keep pricing aggressive while offering a 200 MP sensor and a 50 MP periscope telephoto, the Realme 17 Pro+ could establish itself as a genuine value-for-money champion when it reaches Europe.

We are watching upcoming regulatory certifications closely for more on its SoC and battery life. Until it becomes official, you can browse our catalogue of Realme smartphones in stock in France, along with our dedicated protective accessories including Realme cases and Realme tempered glass.
