A 120W charger on an 80W phone: is it risky?

Today we answer a question that matters just as much: you own an 80W phone and you are looking at a 100W or 120W charger. Is that a good idea? Can you buy it “for the future”? Is it dangerous?

And what about HyperCharge chargers from Xiaomi? Can you mix them?

The short answer is simple: no, it is absolutely not risky — but there is one golden rule to respect for it to work.

Golden rule no. 1: never mix the “families”

Before talking about power (the watts), let’s talk about brands. Proprietary fast-charging technologies are like petrol and diesel.

1. The “SuperVOOC” family = Oppo, OnePlus, Realme.
2. The “HyperCharge” family = Xiaomi, Redmi, Poco.

These two families are completely incompatible with each other.

If you plug a Xiaomi HyperCharge 120W charger into a 120W Realme phone, they will not “understand” each other. For safety, they will fall back to the slowest possible charging, often 10W.

So the rule is simple: an Oppo, OnePlus or Realme phone must use a SuperVOOC charger. A Xiaomi phone must use a HyperCharge charger.

Now that this is clear, let’s talk about power.

Case 1: the SuperVOOC world (Oppo, OnePlus, Realme)

Your phone is “smart”. So is your official charger. When you connect them, they “negotiate” the maximum power the phone can safely accept.

Scenario 1: charger MORE powerful than the phone (e.g. a 120W charger on an 80W phone)

• The question: “I have an 80W SuperVOOC phone. If I buy your 100W or 120W SuperVOOC charger, is it going to ‘fry’ my battery?”
• The answer: NO, absolutely not. The phone is in charge. It will simply “tell” the charger: “I can only accept 80W, thank you.” The 120W SuperVOOC charger will then intelligently cap itself and deliver only the 80W requested.
• Verdict: it is 100% safe, and it is even a smart move. If your next phone accepts 120W, you will already have the right charger.

Scenario 2: charger LESS powerful than the phone (e.g. an 80W charger on a 120W phone)

• The question: “I have a new 120W phone, but my old SuperVOOC charger is an 80W. Does that work?”
• The answer: YES, perfectly. Again, they will negotiate. The phone will ask for 120W, but the charger will reply: “I can only give 80W.” The phone will accept and charge at 80W.
• Verdict: it is 100% safe, but you will not be using your new phone’s full capability. Charging will be slower than it could be.

Case 2: the Xiaomi HyperCharge world (33W, 67W, 120W)

Good news: with Xiaomi, the principle is exactly the same. HyperCharge is designed to be both backward- and forward-compatible.

Scenario 1: more powerful charger (e.g. a 120W charger on a 67W phone)

• The question: “I have a 67W Xiaomi. Can I buy the 120W HyperCharge charger?”
• The answer: YES. It is the best choice. The charger and the phone (which carry Surge safety chips) will agree to charge at 67W. Your phone is perfectly safe and you are ready for a future 120W model.

Scenario 2: less powerful charger (e.g. a 33W charger on a 120W phone)

• The question: “I have a 120W Xiaomi phone. If I plug in a 33W HyperCharge charger, what happens?”
• The answer: YES, it works. But charging will, unsurprisingly, be limited to 33W. So it will be a lot slower.

Conclusion: which one should you buy?

1. Identify your “family”: do you have an Oppo, OnePlus or Realme (SuperVOOC), or a Xiaomi (HyperCharge)? Never mix them.

2. Don’t be afraid of power: there is no risk in using an official charger more powerful than your phone. The phone decides, and it caps the charger.
