OnePlus keeps peeling back the spec sheet of its upcoming OnePlus 15R ahead of an official launch set for 17 December. The brand has just confirmed one key point: the “R” model, usually the more affordable option, makes no compromise on selfies this year. It shares the same front camera resolution as the OnePlus 15 flagship, with one small technical subtlety.
A major step up for selfies
It’s official: the OnePlus 15R will pack a 32-megapixel front camera with autofocus.
This is the most advanced selfie camera ever fitted to an R-series phone. The technological leap is huge compared with last year’s OnePlus 13R, which made do with a fixed-focus 16-megapixel sensor.
Video capabilities take a big step forward too. The 15R can now shoot in 4K at 30 frames per second, whereas its predecessor was capped at 1080p. OnePlus also builds in its “DetailMax Engine”, which uses advanced algorithms to sharpen up image clarity.
The twist: same resolution, different sensor
On paper, the OnePlus 15R goes toe to toe with the standard OnePlus 15: both list 32 megapixels and autofocus.
There is, however, a hardware difference. While the OnePlus 15 uses a Sony IMX709 sensor for its front camera, rumours suggest the OnePlus 15R is said to rely on an OmniVision sensor. The resolution may be identical, but the final rendering could therefore show slight differences in colour.
A confirmed battery monster
Beyond photography, OnePlus has confirmed other specifications that make the 15R a formidable device:
- Performance: It is driven by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip (a major surprise for the R series).
- Record battery life: It carries a gigantic 7,400 mAh battery, compatible with 80W Fast Charging.
- Display: A 1.5K panel with a 165Hz refresh rate.
The phone will also feature a “Plus Key” button, IP68/69 certification and will run OxygenOS 16. It will be available in three colours: black, green and purple.
Conclusion
The OnePlus 15R is shaping up to be far more than a mere “Lite” version. By borrowing the premium model’s selfie specifications and adding a 7,400 mAh battery along with a 165Hz display, it could well overshadow its big brother when it lands on 17 December.
