Nubia, the high-end brand of the giant ZTE

Founded in 2012, Nubia Technology is in fact a former subsidiary of the Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer ZTE, which became independent in 2016 by bringing a Chinese retail giant, Suning, into its capital. ZTE, whose position had stagnated in the global smartphone manufacturer rankings, often relegated to sixth place at the time, retains 60% of the capital of this high-end brand that allows it to stand out. One could now compare what Nubia is to ZTE with what Lexus is to Toyota, or Infiniti to Nissan: a luxury and forward-thinking division of the brand...

Nubia set out to conquer Europe with its Z11!

With the Nubia Z11 in 2016, the brand that pioneered smartphones without side bezels entered the big league; its partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed Nubia's interest in the European market, which is in itself very good news for European mobile users.

The Z11 was indeed Nubia's spearhead. It was during IFA 2016 that ZTE's subsidiary unveiled its smartphone, intended to compete with the star smartphones of the high-end market of the time. And it was a truly successful gamble: the Nubia Z11 really impressed Western users while shaking up the market. The 5.5-inch device with very thin screen edges carried more or less the typical spec sheet of the upmarket smartphone of the time. Displaying a Full HD definition (1,920 x 1,080 px), i.e. around 403 ppi, the screen is relatively free of vertical bezels. Inside the beast, you would find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC with its 4 Kryo cores clocked at 2.17 GHz, as well as an Adreno 530 graphics chip. Two variants were offered for the Z11: the first carried a duo of 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory; the second, 6 and 128 GB. Of course, its successors are available today, but the Nubia Z11 is certainly the model that marked the Chinese brand's entry into the game.

The other legendary Nubia smartphone models

Among the most emblematic Nubia smartphones, we can also mention the Nubia Z18, its Mini version and the famous Nubia X.

The Nubia Z18 is resolutely a high-end smartphone, a worthy heir to the Z11. Launched in September 2018, the smartphone offers a particularly slim notch and a screen that covers nearly 92% of the front surface of the device. The huge 5.99-inch IPS LCD panel displays a Full HD+ definition of 1080 by 2160 pixels in an 18:9 ratio, i.e. a resolution of 403 pixels per inch. On the back, there is a dual camera with 24 megapixels (f/1.6) and 16 megapixels (f/1.6). On the front, an 8-megapixel f/2.0 camera takes care of selfies. The chipset is of course a Snapdragon 845, as befits a high-end model. It is paired with 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of storage, with no possible expansion. The battery, compatible with Quick Charge 4.0, offers a capacity of 3450 mAh.

The Nubia Z18 Mini was unveiled a few months before the Z18. It features a 5.7″ FHD+ screen in 18:9 format, a Snapdragon 660 processor, 6 GB RAM and 64 or 128 GB ROM. Nevertheless, the Z18 Mini still offers a rear camera module of 24 MP + 5 MP and the same 8 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture as the Z18. The icing on the cake: it is also equipped with a 3450 mAh battery, even though it is a mini version.

And last but not least, there is the Nubia X, released this year, which aims to revolutionise the world of bezel-less smartphones by offering a 6.26-inch screen with no notch and... a back with a screen that lets you take selfies by turning the device around! An ingenious solution to the notch problem! Needless to say, the Nubia X is very impressive in the hand. And on the performance side, inside you will find Qualcomm's current best chip, the SDM845 Snapdragon 845 (10 nm) Octa-core (4x2.65 GHz Kryo 385 Gold and 4x1.8 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) with Adreno 630 as GPU. It all runs with 6/8 GB of RAM and 64/128/256 GB of ROM depending on the version.
