The manufacturer is reportedly tightening its line-up around the Xiaomi 18, 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, while the future Oppo Find X10 Ultra and Vivo X500 Ultra are tipped to stay confined to the Chinese market. Let us be clear from the outset: <strong>nothing has been officially confirmed<\/strong> by the brands involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The end of an era: when the camera giants close the door on Europe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For anyone passionate about smartphone photography, the news lands like a cold shower. Remember the general excitement around the previous generations? After years of waiting and frustration tied to regional exclusives, the most extreme flagships such as the Vivo X300 Ultra and the Oppo Find X9 Ultra had finally crossed borders and opened up to the world market, joining Xiaomi&rsquo;s Ultra models already sold internationally. We were finally within reach of direct, official, no-compromise access to the best camera modules on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will that moment of grace have been short-lived? If Kartikey Singh&rsquo;s claims are to be believed, we are in for a genuine backlash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On one side, Xiaomi is said to be dropping its Ultra model outright for this generation. On the other, Oppo and Vivo are reportedly backpedalling by keeping their upcoming Ultra models exclusive to their domestic Chinese market. What does that actually change for you? Quite simply, <strong>European access to the very highest end of mobile photography could disappear<\/strong> temporarily. That technological peak, where sensors push dynamic range and night capture further than anywhere else, would once again become a distant showcase, out of reach in any official global version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens to the Xiaomi 18 range? A three-model hierarchy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dropping the Ultra model does not mean Xiaomi turns up empty-handed. The leaker states that the Ultra name is expected to make a grand return with the following generation, in the shape of a <strong>Xiaomi 19 Ultra<\/strong>, with a launch pencilled in for <strong>late 2027 or the very start of 2028<\/strong>. Xiaomi would therefore be taking a strategic one-generation break, the better to reinstate its photographic monster later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the retreat: soaring memory prices driven by AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faced with such a decision, one obvious question arises: why would a manufacturer as powerful as Xiaomi choose to give up its finest technology showcase?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason given is not technical, but purely industrial and economic. The semiconductor industry is taking the full force of a <strong>historic surge in the cost of DRAM (RAM) and NAND Flash (storage) memory<\/strong>. That dizzying price rise is fuelled directly by the colossal demand from data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure worldwide, which is soaking up a major share of production capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For an Ultra-class smartphone, the equation becomes especially hard to solve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These exceptional devices carry, by definition, massive amounts of RAM and very generous storage in order to handle raw photo files and extremely heavy video.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Combining complex optical modules with memory whose cost has multiplied several times over would send the unit manufacturing cost through the roof.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than being forced to sell a device at a prohibitive price that would put off even the most enthusiastic users, or to slash its margins dramatically, Xiaomi is said to have opted for caution by putting the Ultra on hold until the pressure on the supply chain eases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oppo and Vivo: a retreat to China that confirms the slowdown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This change of course does not appear to be an isolated case. The global versions destined for the rest of the world should follow in the months that come after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rumoured cancellation of the Xiaomi 18 Ultra and the retreat by Oppo and Vivo arguably mark a turning point in the elite camera phone market.
