Today we answer a question that matters just as much: you own an 80W phone and you are looking at a 100W or 120W charger. Is that a good idea? Can you buy it \u00ab\u00a0for the future\u00a0\u00bb? Is it dangerous?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what about HyperCharge chargers<\/a> from Xiaomi<\/a>? Can you mix them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short answer is simple: no, it is absolutely not risky<\/strong> \u2014 but there is one golden rule to respect for it to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Golden rule no. 1: never mix the \u00ab\u00a0families\u00a0\u00bb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before talking about power (the watts), let’s talk about brands. Proprietary fast-charging technologies are like petrol and diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The \u00ab\u00a0SuperVOOC\u00a0\u00bb family<\/strong> = Oppo, OnePlus, Realme.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The \u00ab\u00a0HyperCharge\u00a0\u00bb family<\/strong> = Xiaomi, Redmi, Poco.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    These two families are completely incompatible<\/strong> with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you plug a Xiaomi HyperCharge 120W<\/a> charger into a 120W Realme<\/a> phone, they will not \u00ab\u00a0understand\u00a0\u00bb each other. For safety, they will fall back to the slowest possible charging, often 10W.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So the rule is simple: an Oppo<\/a>, OnePlus or Realme phone must use a SuperVOOC charger. A Xiaomi phone must use a HyperCharge charger.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now that this is clear, let’s talk about power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Case 1: the SuperVOOC world (Oppo, OnePlus, Realme)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Your phone is \u00ab\u00a0smart\u00a0\u00bb. So is your official charger. When you connect them, they \u00ab\u00a0negotiate\u00a0\u00bb the maximum power the phone can safely accept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
